A Liturgy of the Word service will be held Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 1:00 pm in Sunrise Chapel at Walters Funeral Home for Irene Leger, 88, who passed away January 3, 2021 at her residence. Father Chester Arceneaux, rector of the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist, will conduct the funeral services. Heidi Guilbeau and Brandy Watts will be the lectors; and Charlotte Jagneaux, Phyllis Simar, and Ory Veillon will provide musical selections. Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include daughters Merella Palombo, Connie Lee and husband Erik and Tammy Veillon; sons Murphy Leger and wife Debbie, Dennis Leger and wife Monica, John Leger and wife Germaine, Pat Leger and wife Brenda and Kenneth Leger and wife Laurie; sisters Marion Naquin and Thelma D Hebert; brother Albert Dugas; twenty-three grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Joseph Emery Leger; parents the former Yola Cormier and Leonard Dugas; sisters Anna Lee Roger and Rose Thibodeaux; and brother, John Melvin Dugas.
Irene was born in Scott and lived in Lafayette for more than 60 years. She was a dedicated homemaker who raised her eight children as devout Roman Catholics. She was a member of St Jules Catholic Church in Lafayette.
Serving as pallbearers are Scott Leger, Wes Hebert, Jeff Romero, Leonard "Bubba" Leger, Keith Leger, and Kenneth "June" Leger. Honorary pallbearers include Leo Lee, Thomas Veillon, Albert Dugas and Luke Veillon.
The family requests that visitation be held on this Wednesday between the hours of 3:00 - 8:00 pm, and resume Thursday morning at 9:00 am until time of service. A rosary will be prayed at 6:00 pm on Wednesday evening.
