SHREVEPORT, LA – Peggy Elizabeth Davis, 83, passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2012. A private family graveside service will be held.
Ms. Davis was born on March 15, 1929 in Shreveport, LA. She attended C. E. Byrd High School and Texas Women’s University where she majored in Art, leaving within hours of graduating to fly to New York City where she studied painting with artist Hans Hofmann. It was there that Peggy met and married John Haines, another young Hofmann student and aspiring poet. After completing their studies, they made their home in Alaska, also residing in Cape Cod and Carmel. She continued her education at Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans and returned to New York in 1961, bringing her southern charm and hospitality with her. Peggy worked for the Frick Art Museum and continued on with her career as an artist. She greatly enjoyed giving tea and dinner parties for friends, visiting museums, and painting. Peggy also loved traveling around the world, visiting over 86 countries.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Ewretha Miller Davis and Arthur Fleet Davis; brother, Richard M. Davis; and beloved cat, Minou. She is survived by her niece, Peggy Rhodes and husband, Sid; two great-nieces, Rachael and Alex Rhodes, all of Shreveport; and one great nephew, Collin Rhodes, of Dallas, TX.
Peggy embraced life and faced it fearlessly. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
