Mr. Martin DeWitt "Shine" Manning, Sr., was born Saturday, December 28, 1878 in Washington Parrish, La. to Nehemiah and Sophronia (Adams) Manning.

He married Miss Clara L. Burkhalter and together they had two children; Jesse B. Manning and Doris (Manning) Price. Clara passed away August 24, 1915.

After his good friend Wiley Pierce was killed, "Shine" married his widow Ida (Welch) Pierce and helped raise their 6 children; Wendell Pierce, Maxine (Pierce) Bennett, Woodrow Pierce, Harvell Pierce, Eilyne (Pierce) Wigginton and Lynetta (Pierce) Bell. Together Martin and Ida had a son; Martin Manning Jr.

Martin DeWitt Manning passed away Thursday, August 25, 1977 in Franklin, La.

Manning, Ida Pierce, age 84. A resident of Main Street, Franklinton, died October 28th at Riverside Medical Center. Interment was in the Morris Cemetery. Survivors are her husband, Martin D. Manning Sr., four sons, four daughters, one brother, three sisters, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.
