Mary Louise Babington Jones, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and great-aunt, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on Sunday, December 12, 2010, at the age of 97.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Wiley Jones; her parents, William Walker and Mima Magee Babington; sisters Lela, Lenora, Nurcelia, Katie, Willie and Mima; brothers Michael, Robert, William, John, Carl, Richard and Stephen; and great-granddaughter, Chandler. She is survived by her son, Dr. Will J. Jones of Boca Raton, FL; her daughter Mary Louise Prudhomme of Baton Rouge; six grandchildren – Dr. Karen Jones and her husband Dr. Sean Campbell, Renè Prudhomme, Jeanne Prudhomme Coco and her husband Malcolm, Frank Jones, Alexander Jones and Haley Jones; six great-grandchildren – Katherine and Candace Campbell, McKenzie, McGrath and Michael Prudhomme and Caroline Coco; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Born in Franklinton on May 2, 1913, the youngest of fourteen children, Louise raised her family in Covington and retired to Baton Rouge. She graduated from Franklinton High School and obtained her degree in education from Southeastern Louisiana University. Louise was a second-grade teacher at Covington Elementary.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge. A woman of many talents, Louise was known as the “Charleston Queen” by her friends and family during the “Roaring Twenties” and could play piano by ear. Lt. Frank Jones and Louise were married in Shreveport in 1930. The newspaper announcement of her marriage, described her as “an outstanding figure in beauty and grace and a popular leader in the young social set.” Brilliant and beautiful until the end, the remarkable Louise was loved by many and will be greatly missed. The family gratefully acknowledges the loving care of Markel Rumfellow of Feliciana Home Health and Maria Tarleton and the ladies of The Cottage, where Louise lived and laughed in her final years.
Cremation will be under the direction of E.J. Fielding Funeral Home in Covington. A memorial service led by Rev. Chris Andrews will be held in the E.J. Fielding Chapel at 2260 W. 21st Avenue on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 11:00 AM. Friends and relatives are welcome to visit with the family at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the service.
A private interment will be in the Babington-Jones family plot at Ellis Cemetery in Franklinton.
