QUITMAN – Services for Bernard Barrett "Bernie" Smith will be held Saturday at 11 am at First Baptist Church in Quitman with the Rev. Gene Neal officiating. Burial will be held Sunday at 3 pm at Kilpatrick Serenity Gardens in West Monroe, La with Wright's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr Smith, 58, of Quitman, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran, having served for 23 years. He was also the former president of the Clarke County Chamber of Commerce and was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Clarke County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Quitman and he served on the committee for Relay for Life of Clarke County and was very active in numerous community affairs. Survivors include his wife, Sharee Smith, of Quitman; sons, Christopher Smith, of Missouri, Joshua Champion, of Texarkana, Ark., and Jed Champion, of Bossier City, La; daughter, Cynthia Bryan, of Quitman; and two grandchildren, Austin Adkins and Raley Champion. Visitation will be today, after 5 pm at the funeral home, and Saturday, one hour prior to services at the church.
