Shreveport - Funeral services celebrating the life of Mary Elizabeth 'Beth' Sanders Powell, will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at 10 AM at Broadmoor Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Wednesday morning from 9 to 10 AM in the Broadmoor Baptist Church Parlor. Interment will take place at Forest Park West Cemetery following the service. Tom Harrison, minister at Broadmoor Baptist Church, will be officiating the service.
Beth went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 22, 2021 at the age of 82. She was born on March 21, 1939 in Vivian, Louisiana. She was the daughter of O.C. and Elizabeth Sanders. Beth graduated from North Caddo High School and attended Northwestern State University where she received her undergraduate and master's degree plus 30 in education. She was a longtime member of Broadmoor Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, led Vacation Bible School, and sang in the choir.
Beth married Tommy Brooks Powell in 1960, after having known each other since the sixth grade. The two married at First Baptist Church in Vivian, Louisiana. Beth and Tommy moved to Shreveport, Louisiana where they raised their three children. Beth had a passion for education and taught in the Caddo Parish School System for 32 years at A.C. Steere Elementary, Westwood Elementary, Central Elementary, and Riverside Elementary. Beth could also be found most Friday nights in Lee Hedges Stadium, 'The Swamp,' cheering on her husband's Captain Shreve Gators.
Known to her family as 'Grammy', her main love was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Beth loved her friends both old and new. While she maintained her lifelong relationships with friends she grew up with, she also continued to make new friends that brought her equal joy. She loved gathering with her 'Supper Club' friends for dinner, and playing bunco with her teacher group.
Beth is proceeded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Tommy Brooks Powell, her son John Edwin Powell and wife Joanna, her daughters Amy Powell Huddleston and husband Jerry, and Jennifer Powell McCrary and husband Chris; her grandchildren Brooks Powell, Claire Powell, Lauren Huddleston Grayson and husband Colin, Emily Huddleston, Sarah Huddleston, Jack McCrary, Todd McCrary, and Abby McCrary; her great-grandson Jake Grayson; her brother Jim Sanders and wife Dicksey; her brother-in-law Bill Powell and wife Freda; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to LaKesha Simpson, Linda Pennywell, Carolyn Martin, Loraine Butler, and Jayla Hicks. The family requests that memorials be made to the Tom Harrison Pastoral Ministries P.O. Box 5104, Shreveport, LA 71135.
"Well done, Good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things; enter the joy of your Lord"
