Pastor
November 1, 1946 - January 19, 2017
Pastor Larry Powell Allen of Mooringsport, Louisiana went home to be with the Lord on January 19, 2017. In recent years, he has struggled with health issues including a chronic heart condition. After a massive heart attack, his heart was too weak to recover.
Larry was born to Floyd (Funny) Hezekiah Allen and Glenva Joyce Allen on November 1, 1946. He was married to the love of his life, Leslie Dickey, for 43 years. Together they have three children, Luke Powell, Leighton Paul and Lydia Audrey.
He graduated from North Caddo High School in 1964. Attended Louisiana Tech University before getting drafted into the United States Army where he was a percussionist for the 60th Army band. He was called into the ministry and attended Hyles Anderson Bible College, where he obtained his B.S. Degree in Pastoral Theology and Christian Education. After graduating, the Lord led him into starting new churches in places with great need. He then went on to serve in pastoral roles at 10 churches. Up until his death, he was pastoring Hosston Baptist Church.
His entire ministry was focused on bringing the Gospel to broken places including cities like, New Orleans, Chicago, as well as hurting churches all over the south. His life was defined by the things he loved; his Savior, the local church and his family. One of his most cherished roles was “Pappy” to his 9 grandchildren; Claire, Carter, Audrie, Ellie, Hezekiah, Hudson, Beckham, Anna and Leslie. He loved spending time with every one of them and prayed for them persistently.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Joyce Allen, and his older brother, Michael “Mickey” Allen.
He is survived by his wife, Leslie Allen; brother Richard Allen; sister Peggy Allen Parker; children Luke and Ashley Allen, Leighton and Laury Allen, Lydia and G.T. Nehls; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be Sunday, January 22nd at Trinity Heights Baptist Church. Visitation will be at 2:00 p.m. followed by the service at 3:00 p.m.
