He enlisted at Camp Moore, Louisiana on August 13, 1861. The Company Muster Roll for November - December 1862 listed him as absent/sick. His name appeared on file as "Uncarded records shows Private Ansley Meredith, Company K, 12th Regiment Louisiana Infantry enlisted July 29, 1861 at Camp Moore, Louisiana and was discharged by reason of physical disability (chronic sciatica & ulceration of the bowels) on December 13, 1862, at Grenada, Mississippi. An unofficial and unsubstantiated report indicated he died of the measles on the way home from the Battle of Vicksburg per "The Encyclopedia of Founding Families of the Ouachita Valley of Louisiana, 1785 - 1858, page 128."
