Breaux Bridge - Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for Bunice C. Helaire.

Interment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery.

Bunice C. Helaire was born to the late John “Daigo” Champagne, and the late Philoman “Tee-Sir” Champagne on March 18, 1917, in Breaux Bridge Louisiana.

Bunice was married to the late John O’Neil Helaire. They were blessed with four children, three of whom preceded her in death; the late Ramsom Helaire, the late Gerard “JJ” Helaire, and the late Mitchell Nicholas Jr.

Bunice accepted Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Breaux Bridge, La. She recited her rosary every day and frequently displayed her love of the Lord. Engaging in playing cards, watching Wheel of Fortune, or just having a cup of coffee with family and friends elated her heart most. She adored her four little boys, Grant Champagne, Ian Thompson, Kayce Charles, & Kingston Chevalier. She was known as his “Big Mom” to Grant, and to Ian, Kayce, & Kingston, she was known as their “Nanan”. She enjoyed every moment she spent with them. Whether it was during the summer, holidays, and birthdays or even just after school, she always wanted them in her presence. Bunice loved life which enabled her to have a strong sense of responsibility in helping others in their time of need.

After living 99 wonderful years, on December 4, 2016, God looked around his garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth and saw Bunice’s tired face. He put his arms around her and lifted her to rest. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb; so he closed her weary eyelids and whispered “Peace Be Thine”. It broke our hearts to lose her but she didn’t go alone, part of us went with Bunice the day God called her home.

Bunice leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted daughter, Deborah (Paul) Sam; four granddaughters, Ashley Sam, Miranda Sam, Chasity Jones, & Trinicka Martin; and one brother Joseph “Tit” Lester Champagne; and four great grandchildren. She also leaves a host of extended family, nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her Champagne brothers, Yancy, Howard, Marshall, Woodrow, Clarence, and John Harold; two sisters, Goldie C. Zenon and Vera C. Arceneaux.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace. Amen

Visitation will be held Friday, December 9, 2016 at Syrie Funeral Home from 5:00 pm. until 9:00 p.m. and continue Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
