Lafayette – Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church for Anthony Melvin “Joe” Helaire.

Interment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Breaux Bridge, LA.

On October 3, 1949 Anthony Melvin “Joe” Helaire was born to the union of Amilcar Helaire, Sr. and Beatrice “Tot” Helaire. He was called home to be in heaven on Saturday March 7, 2020 at his home.

Mr. Helaire was a native of Lafayette, LA where he graduated from Paul Breaux School. He worked for Marshall Flower Shop for many years. He then moved to Lake Charles, LA where he became a supervisor at Stine in the garden center. He enjoyed sitting under the tree with his friends, Larry Livings and Johnelle Simpson; he loved watching his favorite team play, the New Orleans Saints. Mr. Helaire enjoyed listening to music from Anita Baker and Earth Wind and Fire. He loved giving all the kids nicknames like “Scamper” and “Sucker”. He also enjoyed the cookouts at his son Malone’s house, especially on Sundays for his cowboy stew. His signature mark was having a toothpick. Mr. Helaire was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and will be greatly missed by all.

He leaves to cherish his memories his sons, Tory (Lena) Helaire, Ignatius (Renee) Helaire, Malone Comeaux, Amilcar Simpson; his daughters, Melkeisha Comeaux, Mignon Simpson, Mayola Comeaux, Mades Comeaux, Marie Mouton, Malynka Comeaux and Katena Simpson whom he raised as his own; his sisters, Beatrice Martin, Ursie Helaire Davis of Houston, TX, Verna (Noah) Figaro, and Anna Bell Alexander; his brothers, Thomas (Dorothy) Helaire, Amilcar Helaire, Jr., Alton Helaire, and Clifton Helaire; his godchild, Lea McCoy; 31 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amilcar and Beatrice “Tot” Helaire; two sisters, Mary Louise Davis and Patricia Helaire; one brother, Landry Helaire.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 14, 2020 at St. Paul Catholic Church beginning at 8:00 a.m. until time of service. A Rosary will be recited by Cynthia Comeaux at 9:30 a.m.
