William enlisted in Columbia, Louisiana, on April 19, 1862. On July 4, 1863, his name was listed as a Prisoner of War, sick or wounded, after Vicksburg, Mississippi, capitulated. He was paroled at Vicksburg on July 16, 1863. On March 29, 1864, his name was listed as Officers and men of the 31st Regiment Louisiana Infantry who reported in camp for exchange in Vienna, Louisiana. His name again appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after the army surrendered on May 26, 1865, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was paroled in Monroe, Louisiana, on June 13, 1865.
