He enlisted as 1st Corporal on May 17, 1861, at Camp Walker, New Orleans, Louisiana. On October 28, 1861, he was promoted to 4th Sergeant for time he served as Corporal. The Company Muster Roll for November - December 1861 listed his rank as 3rd Sergeant. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after his capture at Pea Ridge, Arkansas on March 8, 1862. The Prisoner of War Roll listed he was being held at the military prison at Alton, Illinois and was to be turned over to the Upper Mississippi Flotilla for Exchange on May 17, 1862. His rank was listed as Sergeant. The Company Muster Roll for May - June 1862 showed the company was reorganized under the Conscript Act of May 8, 1862, and listed his rank as Private. On July 4, 1863, he was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi and paroled on July 8, 1863. His rank at the time of capture was listed as Private. His name later appeared on a Roll of Officers & Men Who Reported In Camp For Exchange at Natchitoches, Louisiana, on March 29, 1864.

He served an unspecified term(s) as Caldwell Parish Sheriff beginning in 1876.
Following his time as Sheriff, he served as a Steamboat Captain along Bayou Bartholomew.
