He enlisted on July 7, 1861 at Camp Moore, Louisiana. Company Muster Rolls show he was hospitalized in General Hospital, Orange Court House, Virginia, with typhoid fever November 23, 1861 - January 7, 1862. He was captured on November 7, 1863, at Rappahannock, Virginia. As a Prisoner of War, he arrived at Point Lookout, Maryland on November 11, 1863 and exchanged on March 10, 1864. The Company Muster Roll for May - August 1864 listed him as a deserter since April 20, 1864. He was also listed on record, dated March 23, 1865, as a deserter from the Trans-Mississippi Department.
