Reuben Smith enlisted May 9, 1861 at New Orleans, Louisiana. Records show that throughout his early years of service, he performed extra duty details in the hospital and as the Brigade Butcher. The Company Muster Roll for April 30 - August 31, 1864 listed him as disabled in the hospital in Richmond, Virginia. His name appeared on the Register of Invalid Corps and as medically retired on November 3, 1864 in Covington, Georgia. He was sent to Louisiana Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on November 27, 1864.
