June 11, 1954 - December 22, 2007
BOGALUSA - Terry Alan "Coach" Byrd, 53, died Saturday, Dec. 22 at 6:35 p.m. in Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans. Born June 11, 1954, he was a religious, caring and loving father, pawpaw, coach, teacher and best-of-all-friend.
In this holiest of seasons, do not be sorrowful. Remember Coach Byrd's short life as being full and blessed.
A graduate of Bogalusa High School and Southeastern Louisiana University, Byrd fulfilled his life-long dream of coaching the Bogalusa Lumberjacks in baseball, basketball and football for 33 years. He lettered in football, basketball and baseball for Bogalusa High School, graduating in 1972.
Known for his loud voice and size, sense of humor and appetite, Byrd was renowned for his enormous heart in helping the student/athletes of his beloved alma mater. He was offered several more lucrative coaching positions at bigger high schools, but his love for Bogalusa High kept him in Bogalusa.
Wins and losses were not as important to Byrd as teaching young men and women, both black and white, to be the best they could be on and off the playing field. Play hard, hustle and have fun were simple rules he instilled to all Bogalusa High School athletes and students.
He was also a very active member of Annunciation Catholic Church and a motivational speaker.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Loretta Wheat Byrd; a daughter, Niki Byrd; a son and daughter-in-law, Toby and Deidra Byrd; his three beloved grandchildren, Shyanne, Summer and Tyler Byrd, all of Bogalusa; his parents, T.A. and Doris Byrd of Bogalusa; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Willie and Sue Wheat of Bogalusa; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike and Kaye Byrd of Pine, Keith "Skeeter" and Rhonda Byrd of Denham Springs and Lance and Cecilia Byrd of Walker; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clifton and Allison Wheat and Cheryl Hughes, all of Bogalusa; nieces and nephews John Michael, Erin, Ryan, Linsay, Patrick and Elizabeth Byrd, Justin and B.K. Hughes and Karlie Wheat; great-nephew, Talyn Love; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by a niece, Shannon Byrd Love; maternal grandparents, John M. and Lucille Rundell and paternal grandparents, Tillman J. and Bell Byrd.
Visitation is being held today at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from 10:30 a.m. until 9 p.m.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 27 at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.
The funeral service will held at 2 p.m. in Annunciation Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Lawrence Phelps officiating. Interment will follow in the McGehee Cemetery.
