Born in Salisbury, North Carolina, he was the son of Samuel Jones and Drucilla Brown. He attended private school and in 1830-1835 he taught school at Wilkesboro, North Carolina. He graduated Cambridge Law School in 1838 and proceeded to practice law in Brandon, Mississippi. In 1840 he moved to Shreveport, Louisiana. He served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1844-1848 and was elected to the Congress and served from 1853-1855. After leaving Congress, he resumed his law practice and was elected district judge, in which position he served from 1860-1868. He married Annie Neville Stokes and they had six children: Montford Stokes Jones, Katherine Boylan Jones, Mary Alice Jones, Anne Jones, Roland Jones and Esmeralda Mathews Jones. Judge Jones died in Shreveport, Louisiana and is buried in Oakland Cemetery.
