CLARKS, La., May 26 — (Special) — L. T. Fletcher, 50-year-old Caldwell parish constable, committed suicide at his farm home near Kelly early Wednesday afternoon, according to Dr. S. H. Brown, Caldwell parish coroner, who investigated the death.

Fletcher, found dead in a barn on his farm about 2 p.m., was said to have died of a bullet wound in the heart. The bullet had been fired from a .38 caliber pistol which was found lying by his side.

The constable, after lunch, was said to have gone into the garden to work with his son, L. T. Fletcher, Jr., but later went into a feed room in the barn, commanding his son to stay out, it was said.

A few minutes later a shot was fired, and the son rushed in and found his father dead. Fletcher died instantly, but had folded up some feed sacks, pillow fashion, and lain down with the sacks under his head before firing the shot.

Fletcher was a successful farmer and no reason was given for his act, although it was stated that a similar attempt had been made a year ago. The family did not know whether he had the gun on his person when he entered the barn or whether it was concealed in the feed room.

Fletcher, recently elected constable of Kelly, was serving a first term in office.

He is survived by his widow; a son, L. T. Fletcher, Jr.; two daughters, Gracie Hill and Muriel Fletcher; and seven step-children.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Fletcher residence. Interment was made in the old Bethel cemetery at Clarks.
