He enlisted as a Private on September 10, 1861 at Marion, Alabama. The Company Muster Rolls show him present for duty until January - February 1863 at which time his status is shown as "confined in prison at Vicksburg." His name appeared on a record, dated April 12, 1863, of Court Martial for an unspecified offense. His name later appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War upon capitulation of Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863. He was paroled at Vicksburg on July 8, 1863. His name later appeared on a Roll of Officers and Men paroled with the terms of a Military Convention entered into on April 26, 1865. His rank was listed as 4th Corporal. He was paroled at Salisbury, North Carolina on May 2, 1865.
