Enrolled in the Sabine Rebels on September 30, 1861 at Camp Moore, Louisiana. He re-enlisted on May 23, 1862. His name appeared on the Roll of Prisoners of War in the Hospital of General Smith's Division as captured on July 4, 1863, at Vicksburg, and paroled on July 16, 1863. His name also appeared on the Roll of Prisoners of War when his unit was surrendered at New Orleans, Louisiana, May 26, 1865. He was paroled at Natchitoches on June 19, 1865. J.B. Skinner was listed as a Private in Company O Consolidated Crescent Regiment Louisiana Infantry.
