He enlisted on September 30, 1861, at Camp Moore, Louisiana. He re-enlisted on May 23, 1862. On May 26, 1862, he was reported as sick in Sabine Parish; he was listed on the Regimental Return roster in July 1862 and was listed as present for duty on the August 31, 1862, Company Muster Roll. The Company Muster Roll for November-December 1862 listed him as detailed as a Hospital Nurse at the Regimental Hospital. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War on July 4, 1863 after Confederate forces in Vicksburg, Mississippi capitulated. He was paroled at Vicksburg on July 16, 1863. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after the Confederate Army surrendered in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 26, 1865. He was paroled in Natchitoches, Louisiana, on June 19, 1865.
