Etta Mae Barron born June 12, 1916, died in Farmerville at 2:30 am May 28, 2007 after a short illness. Her funeral will take place in the Farmerville Baptist Church at 2 pm, Thursday. Farrar Funeral Home in Farmerville will conduct the burial and she will be interred in the Farmerville Cemetery. Pallbearers are Hoyt Tettleton, Larry McBride, Tony Knight, Gene Barron, Max Williams, Ryan McGlone, and Timothy McGlone.

A lifelong resident of Union Parish, Aunt Etta Mae made her home for the last several years in The Arbor assisted living facility in Farmerville. One of nine children of Emmett Everett Harrison, Sr and wife Mae Holloway of Fork-a-Loutre (Laran) Community, she joins in death siblings Lottie Murrel Harrison (died early), Malcolm Williams of Farmerville, Grace Neal of Monroe, Ruby McHenry of Spearsville, Fenner Murphy Harrison of Utah, Field Burgay Harrison of Arkansas (twins), Emmett Everett Harrison, Jr of Idaho and Robbie Lea Grice of Utah.

When Etta Mae’s father died in 1929, her mother married Berry Abbet of Spearsville and Etta Mae and two younger siblings grew up in that village. In Spearsville she later courted Gurvis E Barron, who at the time was working in his older brother Joe’s cotton gin about a half mile from there and they married January 12, 1936. Etta Mae and Gurvis moved to Farmerville where they first lived in two locations in front of Farmerville High School then later in an apartment in the home of Mrs Cecilia Arent Taylor. While Gurvis served in the South Pacific during World War II Etta Mae worked in Grafton’s Five and Ten Cent Store in Farmerville. Her niece Gloria Williams lived with her during that time and commuted to Louisiana Tech. When Gurvis returned from service they bought a lot in front of Mrs Taylor’s residence and built a house. Etta Mae continued working in Grafton’s and also as a typist in the courthouse.

Etta Mae and Gurvis did not have children. However, they raised Juanita Marilyn McHenry, only child of her deceased sister Ruby. Juanita married James Hamilton and had Lynn McGlone Knight of Atlanta and Steve Hamilton of Illinois. Juanita died several years ago. Etta Mae recently spent two months in Atlanta with grand-daughter Lynn M Knight and husband Tony recovering from a fall that broke a hip and a wrist. Besides grandchildren Lynn and Steve, Etta Mae leaves many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews who cared deeply for her, including Gene Barron, Peggy Rogers, Velda Watson, Gloria Laubach, Nona Hubert, Max Williams, Marilyn Harmer, and Pattie Harrison. Etta Mae also had one surviving sister-in-law Vida Harrison, widow of her brother Emmett, who was visiting with her from Idaho during her last illness.

Those who knew Etta Mae will remember that she was a hardworking, caring, thoughtful individual who loved to cook and bake and do things for others. Whenever there was a death, she was always among the first ones to arrive with food for the surviving family members. She had frequent visitors in her home who enjoyed meals prepared with fresh, canned, and frozen vegetables and fruits from their large garden. Etta Mae contributed much to her town, community, family, and friends, and she will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be Wednesday 5-8 pm at Farrar Funeral Home.
