He was enrolled on July 15, 1862, and enlisted on August 21, 1862, at Camp Butler, Louisiana. On June 30, 1863, he was promoted from 1st Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after his capture Natchitoches, Louisiana on March 21, 1864. He was transferred to New Orleans, Louisiana and exchanged at Red River Landing on July 22, 1864. He took the Oath of Parolee at Natchitoches on June 13, 1865.
