John enlisted on March 17, 1862, at Trenton, Mississippi. On July 4, 1863, he was captured when the Confederate forces at Vicksburg, Mississippi capitulated. He was paroled on July 10, 1863, at Vicksburg. Company muster rolls listed him as absent without leave (AWOL) August 23 - September 16, 1863, and again October 2 - 31, 1863. Other than those dates, he was listed as present. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War received at Ship Island, Mississippi on April 15, 1865, after his capture at Blakely, Alabama on April 9, 1865. On May 1, 1865, he was transferred from Ship Island to Vicksburg. His name appeared on a roll of Prisoners of War after Confederate forces surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4, 1865. He was paroled at Jackson, Mississippi on May 19, 1865.
