Purple Heart
He enlisted August 21, 1940, at Barksdale Field (now Barksdale Air Force Base), Bossier City, Louisiana (Service #14014562). In November 1941, he was reassigned to the Philippines. In December 1941, he was taken Prisoner of War by Japanese forces. Soon after capture, he and other US POWs were loaded aboard the Japanese ship "Arisan Maru" in the South China Sea when the US submarine "USS Shark" fired three torpedoes in to the ship unaware the ship was transporting 1,782 US POWs from Manila, Philippines to Japan. It was reported no POWs were killed in the US submarine attack and that all had escaped the sinking ship. Japanese destroyers reportedly pursued and sunk the USS Shark after which they returned to area the "Arisan Maru" was sunk in search of Japanese survivors.
