John Harmon Elkins, 77, Spearsville, La., died Thursday in a Bernice, La., hospital following a lengthy illness. He was a life-long resident of Union Parish and was retired farmer. He was a member of the Thomas Jefferson Masonic Lodge No. 113 of Spearsville and was a member of the Mt. Union Baptist Church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mattie Rockett Elkins, Spearsville; two sons, Eldred Elkins, Doyleen, La., and John H. Elkins, Jr., Overland Park, Kan.; three daughters, Miss Eloise Elkins, Spearsville, Mrs. Mable Ruth Moore and Mrs. Mary Louise Beene, both of El Dorado; three sisters, Mrs. R. N. Everett, El Dorado, Mrs. W. C. Cherry, Spearsville, and Mrs. D. H. Rockett, Monroe, La.; 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mt. Union Baptist Church near Spearsville with the Rev. Forest Post and the Rev. James Miller officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Union Cemetery under the direction of the First National Funeral Home of Farmerville, La. Pallbearers will be Donald Stone, Oliver Turnage, Bill Harris, Coy Buckshaw, Devayne Garris, Bobby Elkins, Leonard Poston and Troy Foster. The body will remain at the Funeral Home until 9 a.m. and then will be taken to the church. (El Dorado Times - February 19, 1971)
