He enlisted as a Private on September 30, 1861, at Camp Moore, Louisiana. The Company Muster Roll for November-December 1861 listed his enlistment date as September 1, 1861. On November 1, 1861, he was appointed as the 5th Sergeant. On November 21, 1861, he was furloughed for 10 days to St. Helena Parish, Louisiana and returned to duty on December 7, 1861. On May 23, 1862, he re-enlisted at Edwards Depot, Mississippi. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after Confederate forces surrendered at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863. He was paroled at Vicksburg on July 10, 1863.
