December 6, 1945 - July 13, 2013
Jerry Lamar Brazzel went to be with the Lord Saturday, July 13, 2013. Visitation will be held Monday, July 15, 2013 at 10:00am at First Baptist Church of Dubach. The funeral service and memorial will be held immediately following the visitation at First Baptist Church of Dubach with Dr. Connie Ward and Rev. Todd Free officiating. Interment will follow at Fellowship Baptist Church cemetery under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.
Jerry, born December 6, 1945, in Hico, Louisiana, was the son of the late L.C. Brazzel and Iva Lee Brazzel. His father, L.C. was a builder’s builder and a master craftsman, an artist whose pallet was wood, brick, and mortar. Jerry was an apple that fell close to the tree. He was a master craftsman and engineer extraordinaire. He was a builder’s builder and a woodworker that could literally make building projects sing. It was common practice for Jerry to turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse with the appropriate use of mortar, bricks, and boards. He had an eye for classic style yet he understood the need for economy and convenience. Because of Jerry’s extensive intellect, commanding presence, and knowledge of the job at hand, he was always the understood leader in whatever projects he became involved in. There are hundreds of examples of his prowess as a master builder, none better than Maw’s house on the hill.
Jerry was the quintessential provider, spiritual leader, father, and husband. He was a man who had his priorities straight and valued faith and family above all. Jerry lived his life, directed by honesty, sincerity, kindness, and love, whose veritable being was guided by intense integrity. He was a great success in the business world because his ethics, intellect, and work habits were beyond compare. Jerry was a problem solver, morale builder, and an outstanding leader among men.
He graduated Cum Laude in four years with Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering and Business Administration from Louisiana Tech University, both of which were designed to be accomplished in a five year term. He subsequently received a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He had an intense respect for and a desire to achieve excellence in scholarship. Had economics and family responsibilities not been paramount in his life, he would have studied and achieved more advanced degrees, simply for the pleasure of knowledge gained.
Jerry’s thirst for knowledge did not end with technical studies, but extended into an intense desire to understand and have intimate knowledge of the teachings, precepts, and concepts, of God’s Holy Bible. He shared this passion for God’s Word with thousands of whom he taught Bible study in churches throughout Louisiana. Jerry was first ordained as a deacon on June 29, 1980 by Dr. Connie Ward at Emmanuel Baptist Church. He served as a deacon for 34 years. His position of leadership in the church was never sought, but always earned with humility and character.
Those left to cherish his memory are his soul mate and devoted wife of 47 years, Dinah Barnett Brazzel. Jerry was Dinah’s love, strength, and security throughout his life. Also left to remember him are his loving mother, Iva Lee McClung Brazzel; his daughter Chelle Brazzel Brown and son-in-law Chad Brown; and his son Brandon Brazzel. Jerry is also survived by his grandson Bennett Brown. Jerry will be missed by his brothers Albert and Sherwood Brazzel, along with his sister Sarah Brazzel Mills; the late J.O. and Martha Boyd family, the Sammie and Jim Freeman family; the late Del and Ann Miller family, the Sug and Pat Shaw family, the Lewis Barnett family and Carolyn Floyd, the Dale and Lois Pixley family, the Richard and Kay Barnett family; as well as a myriad of nephews, nieces, and extended family and friends. Those who knew him, at the least, respected him and as the norm loved him because he was indeed a good man, a great father, and a loving husband; he was an outstanding engineer, a gifted manager and economist, and a man among men.
Pallbearers will be: Stafford Barnett, Ben Barnett, Shorty Shaw, Al Shaw, Scott Jones and Chris Boudreau. Honorary Pallbearers will be the deacons of First Baptist Church of Dubach.
