Professor Stanton (Stan) Adelbert Taylor, age 89, of Shreveport, died peacefully on December 15, 2015 in Silverton, Oregon. Born in Wilmette, Illinois on May 26, 1926 as the only child of Adelbert and Camilla (Thom) Taylor, Stan graduated from New Trier High School, then entered the Army in 1944. Private Taylor 'agitated gravel' across Okinawa, where he received both a Purple Heart and a triple promotion (E2 to E5). Making excellent use of the GI bill, Stan returned home to attend Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois for his Bachelor's degree, then Iowa State for his Master's, and finally, Oklahoma University for his PhD in Chemistry. During his time at Iowa State, Stan would meet his future wife, Eleanor (Ellie) McDaniel, and also begin his lifelong love of mountaineering with the Iowa Mountaineers. Stan would eventually summit both the Matterhorn, and, in his 65th year, Mount Rainier.Stan and Ellie married in 1956, and had a son, Lawrence Stanton, in 1959, during their time in Norman, Oklahoma. Stan accepted a position as a professor of Chemistry at Centenary College in Shreveport, and their daughter, Denise Adele, was born there in 1962. Professor Taylor remained at Centenary until his retirement to Emeritus status in 1996. Stan and Ellie were longtime members of First Presbyterian Church in Shreveport, where both were active in the choir.Stan and Ellie shared a lifelong love of music and high culture, and were very active in their support of the Shreveport Opera, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Shreveport, of which Stan was President, and also the Shreveport Ballet. Stan was especially well known for his portrayal of Drosselmeyer in the Nutcracker Suite, introducing the chemistry of flash paper to make the part his own.Stan is survived by his son, Lawrence Taylor (Susan) of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, Denise Leland (Evan); granddaughter, Carina Leland of Silverton, Oregon; mother-in-law, Vivian McDaniel of Shreveport (age 104); and his companion, Sabra Bushnell of Shreveport. Stan was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his father-in-law, Russel McDaniel. Memorial Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm, Saturday, January 16.
