Mr. Landry was born on October 30, 1923 in LeRoy, Louisiana and was a resident of Lafayette, Louisiana for most of his life. He worked as a mail carrier in the rural area surrounding Kaplan. From there he moved into health care in 1951, as business administrator of the old Charity Hospital in Lafayette. He also held positions at Our Lady of Lourdes, Lafayette General and Lafayette Medical Laboratory. By 1965, Mr. Landry felt ready for a change, and began offering consulting services to hospitals and nursing homes. This line of work took him to such exotic locales as Canada, Portugal and Venezuela. But he did not forget his Acadiana roots. He has served as visiting lecturer at USL from 1964 to 1991, and his list of involvements with area civic and business organizations reads like a broken record: "1951 to Present...1959 to Present...1960 to Present..." and on and on, for such entities as the Louisiana Hospital Association, American Academy of Medical Administrators, Louisiana Association of Planning & Development Districts, Lafayette Regional Technical Institute (LRTI) Advisory Board, and many, many more.
He had 17 years with the Evangeline Economic and Planning District (EEPD). He has published several books and articles, and written conference papers on topics ranging from Preventive Maintenance to Nursing Home Costs to Selling Your Community.
He has studied all over the United States as well, including terms at George Washington University, University of Oklahoma, University of Texas at Houston, Tulane University and of course, USL. These days, in addition to volunteering his time and talents to Vermilionville, and serving as advisor to the EEPD, Landry provides consulting services to the Governor's Office of Rural Development. He spent about three days a week working in Baton Rouge, in addition to his duties at Vermilionville.
He was a veteran of military service, having served proudly in the United States Air Force. Mr. Landry was a member of the Acadiana Health Planning Council and served as Director, he was also a member of SCORE, a first member of Acadian Ambulance, the Lafayette Sheriff's Department Elderly Abuse Program, Gold Wing Motorcycle Club, RSVP, Lafayette Teen Court, and the Knights of Columbus. He reigned as King Triton XX. Mr. Landry was founder and owner of BJ Landry and Associates. He will be missed by his two children and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Justin Racca, Bill Babin, Huey Romero, Fred Aucoin, Lynn Campbell and Mike Gurzi.
The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN location on Friday, August 20, 2010 from 9:00 AM until time of service.
Special thanks to Mr. Landry's caregivers, Crystal Peltier and Tanya Thomas for their compassionate care.
