LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 3, 2014, at 10:00 AM in Martin & Castille's La Fleur de Lis Chapel in Lafayette, for Avery C. Berger, 71, who passed away on December 29, 2013 in Independence, MO. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Reverend Richard Humphries, Pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church in Lafayette, will conduct the funeral services.
Mrs. Berger was born in Baton Rouge, LA and spent her younger years in Sulphur and Lake Charles, LA. She lived in Owensville, MO before moving to Lafayette in 1972. She lived in Lafayette until 2009 and most recently lived in Independence, MO. Mrs. Berger was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Lafayette. Mrs. Berger dedicated her life to raising her five children and providing a loving home for her family. She received her LPN degree in 1983 and worked for a brief time at Women's and Children's Hospital in the Newborn Nursery. Her nurturing and caring spirit was exemplified through her dedicated work as Activity Coordinator at Heritage Manor Nursing Home and her work at the Gingerbread House Preschool. She enjoyed gardening and took pride in a well manicured lawn. Mrs. Berger enjoyed traveling with her husband and they shared many adventures in their RV. Avery Berger will be dearly missed by her family, friends and all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her husband, Larry E. Berger; two brothers, Charles D. Cordill and his wife Frances D. Cordill of Lafayette, and Stephen H. Cordill, Jr. of Houston, TX; three sons, Stephen W. Thompson and his wife Patricia Thompson of Owensville, MO, Michael J. Thompson and his wife Lori Thompson of Austin, TX, and Brian E. Berger and his wife Nancy Berger of Independence, MO; one daughter, Dana Thompson Garrett and her husband Danny J. Garrett of Lafayette; seven grandchildren, Heather Sample, Kelly Wright (Dan), Kurtis Lansford (Stacey), Lauren Garrett, Katelyn Garrett, Jacob Thompson and Veronika Berger; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one nephew, Charles "Chuck" D. Cordill, Jr.; one niece, Alison Cordill Harson (Blake) of Lafayette; three great-nieces; and one great-nephew. Mrs. Berger was preceded in death by her son, Kurt Allan Thompson; and her parents, Stephen H. Cordill and Mary Louise Cordill of Lafayette.
Pallbearers will be Stephen W. Thompson, Michael J. Thompson, Brian E. Berger, Jacob R. Thompson, Danny J. Garrett and Blake P. Harson. Honorary Pallbearer will be Charles "Chuck" D. Cordill, Jr.
The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's SOUTHSIDE Lafayette location on Thursday, January 2, 2014 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Friday from 8:00 AM until time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Mrs. Berger's name to Louisiana Methodist Children's Home, 904 DeVille Lane, Ruston, LA 71270.
