Robert Sims enlisted May 9, 1861, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Company Muster Roll for May 9 - June 30, 1861, listed him as sick in the hospital. The Company Muster Roll for July - August 1861, listed him as present. His name appeared on a list in December 1861, as sick in the hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Company Muster Rolls for January - February 1862 and March - April 1862, listed him as sick in the hospital. His name appeared on a list of the sick in the hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia, for January and February 1862. His name appeared on a Register for General Hospital, Petersburg, Virginia for April 10, 1862 - May 9, 1862. He was present again for the May - June 1862, Company Muster Roll. He was listed as sick in the hospital again on the Company Muster Rolls for May - June 1863, and July - August 1863. He was again present on the September - October 1863, Company Muster Roll. The Company Muster Rolls for April 30 - August 31, 1864, and September - October 1864, listed him as absent and a Prisoner of War since September 19, 1864, after the Battle of Winchester, Virginia. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War at Point Lookout, Maryland after his capture on September 22, 1864 at Fisher's Hill. He was transferred to Harper's Ferry arriving on October 3, 1864. He was exchanged on February 10, 1865. His name appeared on a Muster Roll of Paroled & Exchanged Prisoners at Camp Lee near Richmond, Virginia, dated February 17, 1865.
