He enlisted March 17, 1862, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was listed as Missing In Action since the battle of Bakers Creek, Mississippi, on May 16, 1863. The Company Muster Roll for May - June 1863 indicated he was captured at Bakers Creek. Union Rolls showed he was captured at Champion Hills (also known as Bakers Creek) on May 16, 1863, and sent to Memphis, Tennessee on May 25, 1863 as a Prisoner of War. From Memphis, he was sent to Fort Delaware arriving on June 15, 1863. On July 31, 1863, he was moved from Fort Delaware to City Point, Virginia, for exchange. After being exchanged, he was admitted to Episcopal Church Hospital at Williamsburg, Virginia for Diarrhea Chronica. On August 28, 1863, he was transferred to the C.S.A. General Hospital in Farmerville, Virginia for Debilitas. On September 9, 1863, he was transferred from the General Hospital to Camp Lee, Virginia. The Company Muster Roll for September - October 1863 reported him as present for duty. Later, the Company Muster Rolls reported him as absent without leave since February 18, 1864.
