SHREVEPORT, LA - Betty Phillips peacefully passed away on November 8 after a brief illness. She was born January 6, 1923, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Ida and Sam Sklar. Mr. Sklar was a pioneer in the early Shreveport oil and gas industry. Mrs. Phillips attended Byrd High School, Newcomb College and The University of Texas where she was elected a "Blue Bonnet Belle." Always a maverick and filled with life, she was loved by all who knew her and touched, as well as influenced, the lives of family, friends and community. In 1982, Betty and Leonard Phillips founded The Betty and Leonard Phillips Deaf Action Center. Betty served as an active Chairman of the Board since its inception influencing the Center's services and programming, as well as raising sponsorships for the Deaf Action Center's Las Vegas Night. Betty was also the co-founder of The Betty and Leonard Phillips Foundation. Betty had a passion for life with favorite hobbies being horseracing, betting football, and gin rummy. She traveled the world extensively with her husband of 45 years, Leonard Phillips. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Sandi Kallenberg, and son, Fred Phillips. She will be remembered by her loyal friends and card players Stacy Anderson, Elaine Francis, Barbara Sugar, Rubye Dehan, as well as the late Carolyn Jones and Miriam Sklar.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Ida and Sam Sklar, her loving husband Leonard Phillips, and brothers, Albert Sklar and late wife Miriam Sklar, Fred Sklar, and her niece Judy Sklar Silberstein. She is survived by her adoring children, Sandi and husband Jeffrey Kallenberg, and Fred Phillips and Electra Churchill. Betty was both a friend and a mentor to her grandchildren and great grandchildren hosting lunches for them on Tuesdays and Fridays. Grandchildren include Gregory and Heidi Kallenberg, Kimberly and Bradley Schlosser, Randolph and Tina Kallenberg, Christopher and Shannon Phillips, Cassidy and Carin Phillips, and Collin, Sue and Alexa Phillips. Great grandchildren include Tobias and Daisy Kallenberg, Razzi, Sophie and Alex Schlosser, Pierson, Betty and Anderson Phillips, and Sklar and Pace Phillips. A tremendous thank you to Betty's dear friend and companion, Thelma Durham, and her faithful "nurse friends," Rokisha Durham, Donna Kennon, Brenda Davis, Sherri Stewart, Rene Hamilton and Mattie Pruitt. The family appreciates the compassionate care given by Drs. Dan Moller and Sally Ball and the incredibly kind nursing staff of the Stepdown Unit at Willis Knighton Pierremont.
Betty will be remembered as "One of a Kind," a fabulous Mom, Grandmom, and Great Grandmom and will be sorely missed by all of us who loved her so much. In lieu of flowers kindly send contributions to The Betty and Leonard Phillips Deaf Action Center, 601 Jordan Street, Shreveport, Louisiana 71101.
Services will take place Wednesday, November 10, at 12 noon at B'nai Zion Temple, 245 Southfield, Shreveport, Louisiana. A private family burial will follow. Honorary pall bearers are grandsons Christopher Phillips, Cassidy Phillips, Collin Phillips, Gregory Kallenberg, Randolph Kallenberg and Deaf Action Center Executive Director David Hylan.
