Lafayette: A Christian graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at Calvary Cemetery for Mrs. Verdie Mae Domingue 80, who passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020.

Our mother, Verdie Mae Domingue, was born in Lafayette, La. On April 5, 1939 to the parents of John Benoit and Silika Zenon Benoit. Our mother would tell us many stories about her childhood. She told us that her father was a strong and proud man who she called 'Papa' and her mother was like a living angel who walked around the house with a rosary, prayed often, and spoke in a tone just slightly above a whisper. She told us how happy, care-free, and strong-willed she was as a child and that she was a lot like her daddy. But, as her children, we know she was really more like hermother- a sweet, beautiful, and loving angel.

At 19 years old, she married the love of her life, Charles Domingue. Together, they had 8 children, but three sons went to glory while they were still precious babies. Mama carried her three babies deep in her heart and was the best and most loving mother to the five children that called her mama. Everyone who knows Verdie, knows her love for her family and that the only love that was greater than her love for her family was her love for God. God was always at the center of her life and the foundation from which she lived her life and raised her family.

Verdie loved serving God. She was an active member of St. Paul/ Good Hope Church for more than 50 years. During those years, she served as Lady Auxiliary of Little Theresa Court No. 11, a Eucharistic Minister, and a Minister of the Sick and Shut-In. She loved singing raises to God and she sang with such joy loud enough for the entire church to hear, which embarrassed us when we were kids. But, the older we got, the more we understood the power of praising through song and that singing was her way to show God how grateful she was for all of his wonderful blessings.

Our mother was as strong as she beautiful and to us there was no one more beautiful. Her beauty can be seen in a picture of her at 19 years old, wearing a short, sassy hairstyle just as it can be seen in a picture as she celebrated her 80th birthday. Mama had a wonderful sense of humor with a laugh and a smile to match. She was honest, hardworking, straight-forward, and filled with wisdom that she shared with anyone who sought it. She wanted the best for everyone: her husband, children, grand and great-grand children, nieces, nephews, and even strangers.

We showed our mother love everyday of our lives and she would sometimes laugh and say that we loved her too much. But, it was impossible to love her too much and we are so grateful to God that Mama woke up every morning; and closed her eyes each night knowing without a doubt that she was loved. Our hearts will forever treasure our love for her and our thoughts will forever replay a lifetime of loving memories. We love you sweet girl. We know that you will forever watch over us from Heaven and that you have reunited with the love of your live and your three precious babies.

Verdie is survived by her 3 sons, Gerard Domingue (Stephanie-deceased), Vincent Domingue (Rachel) and Carl Domingue, her two daughters Gwendolyn Domingue and Monique Domingue, two brothers; Russel Benoit (Mary Jane) and Dallas Benoit, five sisters-in-law, twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, three sons, a granddaughter, four sisters, and five brothers.

She was reunited with God her father on Thursday, April 2, 2020.

Given the current conditions, only a graveside service with no more than 10 people. In addition, social distances must be observed.
