Lafayette – Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 11:00 am at Syrie Funeral Home for Sellie Betty Brown.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

SELLIE BETTY BROWN (nee Jackson) formerly of Lancaster, Pennsylvania transitioned from life to LIFE everlasting Thursday, February 7, 2019 at the Carpenter House Hospice facility in Lafayette, Louisiana after a brief and devastating illness. She was the only child born to Dora Robinson James and Nazarene Jackson on February 14, 1930 in Macon, Georgia. She was raised primarily by her paternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Lenus Jackson, until the age of 16 when she moved to New York to live with her mother. Although she never finished high school, she believed whole heartedly that a good education was to be valued and worked hard for, a fact attested to by all of her children attending college.

While in New York, she was blessed with five children, later moving to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where they finished their primary education. She was no stranger to hard work, working in various occupations as a domestic, millinery seamstress, factory worker, and office worker, doing whatever she had to do in order to provide for her family. She worked until she relocated to Louisiana in 2012 to live with her son and daughter in love.

Later in life, she met the love of her life, Charles Brown, and after many years of courtship, they were married August 11, 1987, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They would spend many happy years together until illness caused his demise April 2014.

In her youth, Sellie was a member of the Orchids Social Club in New York where she made many of her lifelong friends. She and her husband Charles were both avid members of the IBPOE of Elks, where she attained the rank of Past Daughter Ruler of the Queen of Sheba Temple 137, Shining Light Council # 2. They enjoyed traveling the breadth and length of the United States attending the many conventions. There is a saying that it takes a village to raise a child, and “Miss Sellie” was certainly an active member of the village. Many children from the neighborhood enjoyed the hospitality of her home, considering it their home away from home. She had a razor-sharp tongue, quit wit and infectious personality which attracted many friends. To her children and grandchildren, she was a strict disciplinarian, demanding respect in behavior and excellence in personal achievement. But in spite of her sternness, she taught them all how to laugh even in hard times. In 2014 she made the most important decision of her life, accepting Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord during a service at Good Hope Baptist Church.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children Alterman “Chip” Jackson (Jennifer), Frankie Hughes, Betty Hughes-Johnson (Danny - deceased), and Patricia Hughes Jones (Thurston); grandchildren Quincee Nichols-Gibbs (Calvin), Saige Jackson, Marques Jackson, Edward T Jones, II (Lisa), Ian A Jones, Meghaan Jones, and Zachary Hughes-Summers; great-grandchildren Willaja, Caiden, Taylor-Marie, and Micah and grand and great-grand daughters of the heart Anna Mond, Andrea Mond, Ebone Jackson, Leyonna Mond and Alexandria Jackson; and her siblings: Dorothy, Lucille, Christine, Odessa, Lillian, Leon, Edna, Josephine, Catherine, Margaret, Betty; and her two cats, Sadie and Sandie.

She was preceded in death by husband, Charles Brown; son Eugene Terry Jackson and brother Andrew Jackson.

The family wishes to extend a special acknowledgement to her dedicated caregiver and granddaughter of the heart, Raquel Taylor. Raquel, we love you for all that you have done for our Mother and Nana. You will always be a part of our family.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Syrie Funeral Home from 10:30 am until time of service.
