Funeral services for Mr John Henry Burgess, age 95, of Bastrop, Louisiana will be held 2 pm Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home, Bastrop with Dr Vic Carter officiating. Interment will be at the Bonne-Idee Harp Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home, Bastrop.
Visitation with the family will be Saturday morning from 10 am till service time at the funeral home.
Mr Burgess was born September 16, 1911 in Hamburg, Arkansas and he died Thursday, September 21, 2006 at Morehouse General Hospital in Bastrop. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Annie Belle Burgess, granddaughter, Becky Spurlock, and a great-grandchild, Cody Spurlock.
Mr. John Henry Burgess was retired from the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Department where he served as night marshal for the Village of Mer Rouge. He was a member of the Gardner Baptist Church in Hamburg.
Mr Burgess is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris V McGowen Burgess of Bastrop, daughter Martha Spurlock and husband Bobby of Bastrop, sons Newt Carpenter and wife Betty Gail of Bastrop and Homer Burgess and wife Eva of Corpus Christi, Texas, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Scott Spurlock, Marty Spurlock, Christopher Spurlock, Richard Spurlock, and Dean Carpenter.

Funeral services for Mrs. Doris Victoria Burgess of Bastrop, Louisiana formerly of Mer Rouge, , Louisiana will be held 2:00 pm Friday, December 4, 2009 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop with Bro Johnny Legg officiating. Interment will follow at the Bonne Idee-Harp Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home, Bastrop.
Visitation with the family will be Thursday evening, December 3, 2009 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Doris Victoria McGowen Burgess was born September 10, 1916 in Mer Rouge, Louisiana and died December 1, 2009 at the LeGrand Nursing Home in Bastrop. Mrs Burgess was a homemaker and member of the Faith Baptist Church in Bastrop. She was preceded in death by her husband John Henry Burgess; daughter Annie Belle Burgess; parents R T McGowen and Minerva Burch McGowen; brothers J C McGowen, Paul McGowen, Billy Bob McGowen and Cullen McGowen; sisters Robbie Howell and Bonnie Belle Rea; granddaughter, Becky Spurlock; grandson, Ricky Spurlock; great-grandson, Cody Spurlock; and son-in- law, Bobby Spurlock.
She is survived by her daughter, Martha Burgess Spurlock of Bastrop; sons Newt Carpenter and wife Betty Gail Carpenter of Bastrop and Homer Burgess and wife Eva of Corpus Christi, Texas; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Marty Spurlock, Christopher Spurlock, Dean Carpenter, Terry Montgomery, Marvin Bolding and Billy Hugh Bunch.
