Turner enlisted September 1, 1861, at Sabine Parish, Louisiana. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after his unit surrendered in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 26, 1865. He was paroled in Natchitoches, Louisiana, on June 21, 1865.
