James Walker enlisted March 1, 1862 at Homer, Louisiana. Company Muster Rolls for March 1863 through February 1864 noted he had been detailed extra duty as the Brigade blacksmith. On February 22, 1864, he was captured at Fishers Hill. His company's Muster Roll for April-August 1864 showed his status as Absent - Prisoner of War. As a Prisoner of War, he arrived at Harper's Ferry on October 3, 1864. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War paroled at Point Lookout, Maryland and transferred for exchange. His name was on a Muster Roll of a detachment of Paroled and Exchanged Prisoners at Camp Lee near Richmond, Virginia dated February 17, 1865.
