He enlisted as a Private on May 9, 1861, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Company Muster Roll for April 30 - August 31, 1864, reflected his promotion to 3rd Sergeant; however, the Company Muster Roll for September - October 1864 reported he was promoted to 1st Sergeant effective August 31, 1864. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War from the CSA Army of Northern Virginia after General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. He was paroled on April 10, 1865.
