The record first appears with his capture on the Mississippi River on July 12, 1863. He is found on the Roll of Confederate POWs sent from Vicksburg to Cairo, Illinois to be forwarded to Depot for Prisoners of War on November 26, 1863 (Headquarters 17 Army Corps, Provost Marshal Office, Vicksburg November 26, 1863). On December 7, 1863, he was listed as being at Camp Morton and then transferred to Ft Delaware, Delaware, on March 19, 1864. He war received at Ft Delaware on March 22, 1864, and then forwarded to City Point, Virginia for exchange. He was exchanged on March 7, 1865.
