VERL WARREN WOOD, AGE 81
And a resident of Franklinton died at 2:55 pm Wednesday September 7, 2011 at Northshore Specialty Hospital in Covington. She was born October 15, 1929 in Mount Olive, MS and grew up picking cotton alongside her family. Mrs. Wood was a member of Poplarhead Missionary Baptist Church and a retired cafeteria cook with the Washington Parish School Board.
When her husband James Yates Wood died in 1969, Mrs. Verl took over as matriarch of the Wood family, raising her children on her on. She made sure that each child and grandchild knew the importance of family. She was the advisor, moral compass, teacher and strong force that kept everyone on the straight and narrow. Mrs. Wood loved nothing more than to have her family near, such as all holidays and birthday celebrations being at her house. She loved to crochet, and enjoyed walks in the woods and watching wildlife from her back porch, where almost daily family would gather to drink coffee and visit. It is impossible to realize the impact she had in shaping the lives of her family and who they are today.

8 Grandchildren and spouses: Christina and Greg Smith, David C. Miller, Justin and Katie Miller, Melissa Wood Kennedy, Cindy and Donald Wills, Christopher and Stephanie Miller, Sarah and Bryan Brock, Wendy and Cole Bickham
5 Brothers and Sisters: Bobby Warren, Alvin Warren, Thelma Evans, Alberta Mullins, Geneva Scott
Brother in law: Douglas Guy

She was preceded in death by her husband James Yates Wood, beloved granddaughter Monica Wood, parents Jefferson Thomas Warren and Barbara Elizabeth McClendon Warren, brothers and sisters Buford Warren, Dewey Warren, Felton Warren, Truit Warren, Minnie Benton, Esma Miller, Margie Runnels and Earline Clay, mother in law and father in law Thomas Jefferson Wood and Nettie Wood and sister in law Laura Wood Guy.
A private family service was held with burial at Magee Cemetery.
