Washington County,
Louisiana

November 11, 1861 - January 20, 1906

Husband of Ida Elise Solomon Moore Sturdivant
Era Leader
2-3-1906
Last Sunday, while at work floating square timber down the Bogue Chitto River, Mr. M.A. Sturdivant, a prominent citizen and timber man of Zona, was accidentally killed. Mr. Sturdivant, at the time of the accident occurred, was steering a raft of square timber down the current, when in some way he was struck by the rudder and thrown violently forward, his forehead striking the sharp edge of a piece of timber with such force his skull was completely crushed by the contact.
The sad news of the accident was telephoned to Mr. Edge Sturdivant, a brother of the deceased who resides in Franklinton, Sunday evening, and he left immediately for Zona. The accident occurred after Mr. Sturdivivant had reached Jenkins' river with his timber raft.
The remains were brought to Zona, and preparations were made for interment which took place at the Enon cemetery on Tuesday, February 20th. The funeral rites were conducted by Rev. W.R. Harvell, pastor of the Methodist church at this place, at 3:30 o'clock p.m.
Mr. M.A. Sturdivant was 43 years of age and one of four brothers who came to this state from Alabama some five years ago. These brothers have, during their residence here, won the esteem _____ people at large, who regret that one of these good men should be compelled to pass out of this life in such a deplorable way.
Besides three brothers, Mr. Sturdivant left a devoted wife and three small children. To these bereaved ones The New Era extends its heartfelt sympathy and condolence.
