Purple Heart

Joe Pierce Phares, age 89, died Wednesday, April 12 at 7:55 p.m. in his residence at Franklinton. He was a World War II veteran having received a Purple Heart while serving with Gen. George Patton. A retired dairy farmer, he was the previous owner of J&B Grocery, retired from Southeast Louisiana Hospital and a member and deacon at Bethel Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jessie Corkern Phares of Franklinton; a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Jake Bateman of Baker; two granddaughters and their spouses, Lori and Lt. Dean Liner of San Diego, Calif. and Sandy and Dennis Wackett of Denham Springs; three great-grandchildren, Savannah and Jacob Liner and Brady Wackett; and a brother, Carey Phares of Franklinton.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Matalee Brumfield; and a brother, Stewart Phares.

Visitation will be today at Crain Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until time for the final service at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Larry Archote and the Rev. Shane Moore will officiate, with burial following in the Bethel Baptist Church.

And a resident of Franklinton died at 4:30 PM Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at North Oaks Hospital in Hammond, Louisiana.

She was a retired Psychiatric aide with Southeast Louisiana Hospital, a member of the Mary Hearts, and the longest attending member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Survived by: Daughter and son in law: Charlotte and Jake Bateman of Baker, 2 Granddaughters and spouses: Lori and Lt. Cmdr. Dean Liner of Pensacola, FL, Sandy and Denny Wackett of Denham Springs, 3 Great grandchildren: Savannah and Jacob Liner, Brady Wackett, Sister: Nellie Spencer of Franklinton.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Phares, sisters Olie Varnado, Blondie Holmes and brothers Olan Corkern and Jimmie Corkern.

Visitation will begin after 11 AM Friday, February 20, 2009 until time of funeral service at 2 PM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Denny Brumfield and Rev. Ralph Parks officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dean Liner, Denny Wackett, Lee Davis, Brent Hoggatt, Stephen Welch and Fred Spears, Jr.
