Mattie
March 7, 1924 - January 1, 2015

Mrs. Mattie Adele Bragg Davis passed away on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015 at 3:07 a.m., at Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Ala.
Mattie was the eighth child born to Dave and Mattie Ophelia Smith Bragg on March 7, 1924 in Spearsville. She dedicated her life to Christ at an early age, uniting with the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. After moving to Morehouse Parish, she became a member of New Star Missionary Baptist Church in Collinston, where she served as a Deaconess and a member of the church choir. Later, she moved her membership to St. John Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess, choir member and worked on several auxiliary committees. She remained a faithful member of this church even though her health began to fail due to Alzheimer's disease, forcing her move to Alabama, to live with her daughter and family. While living in Huntsville, Mattie attended church with her family at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Pulaski, Tenn. and First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala. where she regularly participated in Sunday School Class #8.
Mattie attended school in Union Parish and graduated from high school as valedictorian in 1946. She next attended Grambling College where she received both her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education. While attending Grambling, Mattie met and married the love of her life, Royce Eugene Davis. This union, which produced three children, ended 52 years later, with Eugene's death in 2001.
She began her professional teaching career at Morehouse Elementary School in 1950. Several years later, she joined Eugene at Collinston Elementary School, teaching first grade for many years. She then returned to Bastrop's Southside Elementary School, where she taught until her retirement. Mattie believed in the power of education and served as a mentor and role model to many of her students.
Mattie was an avid Grambling State University Alumni member; attending every home football game and supporting the school as much as possible. She was a member of Morehouse Retired Teachers' Association, Louisiana Retired Teachers' Association and the National Association of University Women, where she served as President. She was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for 61 years.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are her three children; Monica Davis Arrington, Houston, Texas; Drs. Craytonia L. and Janice Marie Davis, Bowie, MD; Sandra Davis McCoy and Reverend Mark McCoy, Harvest, Ala.; nine grandchildren, Cheryl Gray-Williams, DeAndre and Angie McCoy, Michael Arrington, Andrew McCoy, Royce Davis, Miles Davis, Christina McCoy and Candace McCoy; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Christine Davis, Houston, Texas; one brother, Mr. Bobby D. Bragg, Los Angeles, Calif.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, five godchildren and extended family.
Funeral services for Mrs. Davis are scheduled for 12 noon, Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015 at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 1407 West Madison, Bastrop with Rev. Steven Conley, officiating. Interment will follow in the H.V. Adams Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday morning, Jan. 10, from 9 to 11:15 a.m. An Ivy Beyond The Wall Ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m.
