KINGWOOD, TX - Murelyn (Mert) E Carter passed away on March 5, 2017, in Kingwood, Texas. He was eighty-nine years old. He was the son of deceased parents, Essie Mae and Elmore Carter; deceased brother and sister, Maurice Carter and Elsie Carter Young. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Juanita; and daughters, Sandy Chandler and Kathy Carroll and husband, Bill; grandson, Brian Carroll and wife, Carrie; and great-grandson, Liam; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Clarks, Louisiana on December 11, 1927. He spent most of his childhood years growing up in Clarks, Louisiana on a rural farm. He was a World War II, Korea and Vietnam War Veteran. Mert was proud of his Air Force military service and retired after twenty-one years in 1967 with an honorable discharge from Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana. He loved to travel and the Air Force allowed him the ability to travel the world. After his retirement from the military he went on to work with Retail Credit (Equifax) and Bossier Parish Assessors Office.
Mert was s 50 year Mason having been raised in 1958 while stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. He was a member of Atkins Lodge #266 F&AM Taylortown, Louisiana, OES Bossier City #175, Humble Masonic Lodge #979 AF&AM, Humble, Texas and OES Humble Chapter #415. Mert was also a 32 degree member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonary.
Mert and Juanita moved to Kingwood, Texas in fall of 2014 to be near their children. He continued to spend the vast majority of his time caring for his wife, Juanita who has Alzheimer's.
Mert was a friend to everyone and had a knack for striking up conversations with complete strangers. He always shared a kind word, a joke, or a hug with whomever he encountered. He grew lasting relationships in his church, at his lodge, in the community, in the Air Force and at work. All who knew Mert were blessed by his friendship and uplifting cheerful attitude.
Mert will especially miss the staff and friends he has made at Cypress Woods Retirement Community and a special thank you to the staff at Altus Hospice Group for their care during his final days.Mert lived a life of passion and meaning and will be missed with great sorrow.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, you consider the following charitable options in honor of Mert Carter: Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, Texas and the Shriners Hospital for Burns in Galveston, Texas.
