Funeral services for Mrs Flora Mae Wright, age 96 of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Ruston. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Flora Mae Wright was born on April 13th, 1920, to Catherine and Matthew Dowdy on a family farm in Jonesville, Louisiana.

The oldest of four children growing up in a flood plain during the Depression, Flora said she and her siblings always felt well provided for.

In high school Flora met her future husband Howard William Wright Jr, and got her nickname "Blacky," the name all her future friends and family would come to know her by.

Just before Howard was deployed in WWII, he and Blacky were married. She would wait, live and work in Baton Rouge for over two years while he was a prisoner of war. When he returned and finished law school they moved to Ruston for his first job.

Blackie and Howard became avid supporters of the local school sports and active members of Temple Baptist Church. In 1950 they became parents, and a few years later adopted their second child.

Their family home became the center of their family's activities for over 60 years, hosting bar-b-ques, grandkid sleep-overs, and many holidays. She shared her love of cooking, archeology, birding, word games and puzzles, and much more with all her friends and family.

All who knew her will remember her sharp wit and her laughter, as she was always able to find the beauty and wonder in the little things in life. Blacky passed away peacefully in her home November 7, 2016.

Blacky was preceded in death by husband Howard, sister Catherine Rowena, brothers Matthew Thomas and Robert Barron, and daughter-in-law Judy Reeves. She is survived by children Howard William Wright, III, MD and Ann Wright Hunt (Jimmy), and grandchildren Kristopher Sylvis Thomas (Rebecca), Ashley Hunt Moody (Taylor), Howard William Wright IV (Carrie), James Davis Hunt, Jr (Nicole), Laura Hunt Miller (Craig), Clinton Lee Wright (Melissa), Thomas Soyars Hunt, Cathryn Hunt Judice (Mike), and Alexandra Morgan Hunt (fiancé Wiley North). She also had nine great grandchildren Haley, Luke and Kallie; Lilly, Olivia and Caroline Moody; Emerson and Parker Wright; Jamie and Alice Hunt; and Caleb and Hannah Wright.
