Lieutenant Colonel Paul was appointed on September 6, 1861. On December 15, 1861, he was listed as at home on sick furlough for 30 days. On or about July 1864, he was transferred to General Beauregard's staff. His name appeared on a list of staff officers serving at Headquarters of General Beauregard paroled under terms entered into on April 26, 1865. He was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, on May 1, 1865. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War remaining in Richmond, Virginia under heading "Amnesty Oath administered to paroled prisoners" dated May 8, 1865. His name appeared on another list of Paroled Prisoners remaining in Richmond, Virginia, also dated May 8, 1865.
