Bennie Hughes Abell passed away quietly on August 14, 2014. Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M., Monday, August 18, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe. Preceding memorial services, visitation with the family will begin at 12:00 Noon in the church sanctuary. Devoted to her family, Bennie was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Nelson Dyer Abell. She is survived by three sons and their wives: Nelson III and Stephanie of Monroe; Hughes and Betsy of Austin, Texas; Dixon and Martha of Monroe; seven grandchildren: Graham and Claire; Lucy and Sam; Helen, Harold and Mary Martha; and seven great-grandsons. She is also survived by one brother, L. Graham Hughes, and wife Eleanor of Jackson, Mississippi, along with her three nieces and their families. Mrs. Abell was born November 13, 1925, to Bennie Wathen Hughes and Lucius Graham Hughes of Monroe. A Neville High School alumnus, she graduated from LSU in 1946 with Phi Kappa Phi honors. In 1998, she was enshrined into the LSU Hall of Distinction. In 2006, Mrs. Abell received additional recognition with induction into the ULM Hall of Distinction. Mrs. Abell was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Monroe. Her civic involvement included the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, Monroe Garden Study League, Potpourri Book Club and several additional garden and book clubs. For years, she enjoyed hosting family and friends in Utah or Alaska during the summertime. Private graveside services will be held at Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Homes of Monroe. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, 1201 Stubbs Avenue, Monroe, LA 71201 or an organization of personal preference.
