Betty May Root Turner, 87, of Sarepta died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 at her home. She was born on May 5, 1924 in Lincoln, Nebraska to the late Clyde Nelson and Lillian Josephine (Porter) Root.
Betty enjoyed working in the restaurant business all her life until her retirement and she then planned on watching TV and enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing and playing the guitar.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Billy Root and Jerry Root; and sister, Ruth Elaine Chambers.
Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Mae Downs of Sarepta; stepdaughter, Nancy Allen and husband, Red of Huntsville, Alabama; stepsons, Gerald Turner and wife, Judy of Decatur, Alabama and Bobby Turner and wife, Suzanne of Decatur, Alabama; brother, Clyde "Sonny" Root and wife, Martha of Texas; sisters, Anilee McGill of Sevierville, Tennessee and Norma Fiertag and husband, Gene of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Richard Edward Downs and wife, Theresa, Michael Dale Downs and wife, Emily, Kelly Cash and husband, Greg, Chris Owens, Randy Suggs and Connie Bradford and husband, Johnny; great-grandchildren, Makayla Downs, Alyssa Downs, Logan Downs, Aubrey Downs, Hannah Downs, Ian Downs, Adriana Downs, Rebecca Downs, Trinity Downs, Jane Downs, Tori Cash, Teddy Cash and Bonnie Bradford Ozbolt; and caregiver Kathy Ketchens of Sarepta.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Cotton Valley with the Rev. Brian Dauphin officiating. Burial will follow in Cotton Valley Cemetery under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc. of Springhill. Visitation was held Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Davidson, Kyle Greer, Spencer Pipes, Michael Pipes, Michael Morse, Rex Morse, Terry Brown and Greg Cash. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Vowell, Robbie Hayden, Jeremy Robinson, Will Lynd, Don Willis and Ronnie Moreland.
