Lafayette - Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at 2:00 PM in St. Mary Catholic Church in Lafayette, for Sally Gray Block, 86, who died on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at her residence in Lafayette.
Inurnment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Reverend Harold Trahan, Pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Lafayette, will conduct the memorial services.
Sally was born and raised in the small community of 810 people in Harrisville, at the base of the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. There, she met the love of her life, John T. "Jack" Block when he was serving in the United States Air Force and stationed in Watertown. They married in 1952, and together they settled in Lafayette, Louisiana, residing here since 1964.
Sally was very involved at Saint Mary's Catholic Church where she served regularly as a Eucharistic Minister.
She leaves behind her devoted husband of 66 years, John T. Block of Lafayette; two sons, Michael John Block and Randall Joseph Block (wife Elizabeth); one daughter Terri Ann Block Bodin; six grandchildren, Aaron Block, Kelly Block Williams (husband Arthur), Holly Block Klock (husband Chris), Jason Bodin, Heather Block Duplantis (husband David), and Haley Block; and seven great grandchildren, Camille Williams, Addison Williams, Tristan Klock, Wyatt Klock, Ella Klock, Charlotte Duplantis and Audrey Block.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Berta Langs; her daughter, Julie Lynn Block, and one son-in-law, Bill Bodin.
Sally and her husband were often seen as loving fixtures at many local restaurants in Lafayette, rarely breaking routine. You could not pass her home during a Holiday without seeing an explosion of decorations to celebrate, and there isn't a flower she did not love. With her prize-winning green thumb, she tenderly cared for her landscape, and this was evident year-round. To walk into her home was to smell either beautiful fragrances or something delicious cooking, and to be greeted with a welcoming hug. She enjoyed being a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was especially joyous from the inside out when she was around her great grandchildren. More importantly, there are many for whom she shared similar love, and treated them as if they were her own. She would always mention how blessed she felt, often reflecting upon wonderful memories, never taking for granted the special moments experienced throughout her life. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family requests that visitation be observed at St. Mary Catholic Church on Thursday from 1:00 Pm until time of services.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mrs. Block's name to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston, Ste 200, Lafayette, La 70503, Lafayette, LA 70506 or to your favorite organization.
The Block family would like to give special thanks to the hospice nurse JoAnn Harrington and her caregivers, Shannon Menard and Sonny Pete.
